"Respirator" means a facemask that seals around the mouth and nose for the purpose of filtering all the air the wearer inhales.
Respirators can be constructed of either:
a) an elastomeric body designed to be reused many times with replaceable electrostatically-charged, glass fibre, charcoal and/or gas filters, straps, etc
b) an electrostatically-charged fabric designed to be disposed of after one or a small number of uses.
Most reusable elastomeric respirators (N95, FFP2, FFP3, P100) have exhalation valves, but some don't.
Most disposable fabric respirators (KN95, KF94, N95, FFP2, FFP3) don't have exhalation valves, but some do.

Humans are such ridiculous thinkers. I remember learning about Jon Snow near the beginning of the pandemic. He proved cholera was being spread through contaminated water, and he was fighting to convince the "miasma" thinkers.
And I was just like... fellas... has nobody considered that it could be... BOTH? That it might vary by the particular disease? Or even that one disease could have multiple forms of transmission? Why does your pet theory have to be the ONE TRUE theory?

🔗 Stanford must end its complicity in COVID harms
It’s unconscionable that Stanford School of Medicine and the Freeman Spogli Institute hosted a conference in October led by architects of the disablement of 100 million people and the preventable deaths of tens of millions more. It’s even worse that University President Jonathan Levin lent institutional support by volunteering to make the opening remarks. It’s worse yet that the apparent success of this conference may have influenced President Donald Trump to tap at least two conference participants for top health posts.

🔗 Developing chlorine-based antiseptic by electrolysis pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/319055…
> This paper examined the possibility of using hypochlorite water as a chlorine-based antiseptic for handwashing in public buildings and healthcare facilities. The electrolysis method was used, which produces Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) from mixing drinking water with small amounts of sodium hydroxide. Hypochlorous acid is usually produced by blood cells to surround pathogens when the skin is cut and exposed to pathogens. The methods used were based on hydrolysing drinking water at a different salt concentration (from 0 up to saline water 0.9% NaCl) under the different power supply. The results showed that 0.005-0.01% hydrochloride water can be a perfect antiseptic that can kill most bacteria and pathogenies within 12 s. In one prototype set up one liter of the prepared solution needed the only 2 g of NaCl, 12 V and 3 amps' power. However, the pH value should be maintained to be around 5-6. The results also showed that the most efficient way was to produce the solution on-site. However, if stored properly it can be used for 7-10 days after production.

I suspect that maximum power draw is when the device is activating the heating (it needs to heat up to ~60 degrees celsius internally).
After switching it on (while blinking red), it needs to go up from 20 to 60, so there is some continuous heating. After that, I guess it will pulse the heater to stay at 60.
I didn't measure that, just educated guessing.

Edit: Thank you for helping. 💚 I ordered some of the Moldex masks and looked up some decent medical tape as a backup for my regular FFP3 masks. I'll be practicing at home with the seal to see if it holds for a couple of hours. I'll bring as much proof as I can collect to convince the hospital employees that I'm wearing no metal. Fingers crossed.
----
Asking for help from German speakers or Moldex mask knowledgeable people, please.
I'll need an MRI soon, so I can't use any masks with metal (nosepiece, clips or antimicrobial layer). Someone told me Moldex masks are MRI-proof, so I've been looking around at their masks and found a German shop where I can order, but I'd like some confirmation. Isn't there any metal on/in the following masks?
industrieware.de/Moldex-Atemsc…
industrieware.de/Moldex-FFP2-N…
industrieware.de/FFP-2-NR-D-At…
industrieware.de/FFP3-Air-Seal…
It would be nice to try them, since I can buy them per 1 piece (I don't want a big box in case they don't fit), there are several sizes, and they ship in time to me.
Have you tried any Moldex masks? Do they give a good fit for you? Any noticeable differences between the several types? They appear kind of big in the pictures.
PS: Readimasks aren't available in the EU, the easimask is sold out in EU stores, or only sold in expensive bulk, or take too much time and money with customs to get imported on short notice. I have a Prescient Breathe mask without metal, but can't get a good seal with it and the hospital most likely won't allow any elastomeric respirators and the likes, so it's really a total last resort to depend on one of those.
I could still use the FFP3 mask I normally use and remove the metal nosepiece, then try to seal it with medical tape. But the seal might not stay perfect throughout the process either.

Even with NIOSH N95 certification and filters that last a year, $70 is way too pricey imo (never mind $129, Flo). At $30, though and especially if you haven't been able to find a P100 you're comfortable wearing, it might just be worth a look.

more particles in a room do not increase Covid risk. More people do. Particles are not a good proxy for people. CO2 is. Better use a CO2 sensor.
That is not to say that particles do not matter. They do. They should be filtered out. They just don’t matter in the context of Covid.
Pandemicene reshared this.
@hhf strictly speaking, the bioaerosols that carry sarscov2 virions are indeed particles -- albeit generally considered to be smaller than 2.5 microns -- and it is by filtering out these smaller particles with crboxes, hepa filters, and respirators that their concentration in a room and thus transmission events can be reduced. CO2 is merely a proxy, though beyond the acidity of the air it plays no direct role in the transmission of pathogens.
But I do understand the point you intended to make and for someone uninitiated in fluid dynamics and IAQ it's important to understand that a pm2.5 sensor doesn't identify the presence of airborne pathogens. The article itself doesn't invoke sarscov2 either, but swapping in a CO2 sensor is exactly what I had in mind in this context 👌

Conspiracy of Silence?
There seems to be a conspiracy of silence around COVID. How did everyone get this memo but we didn't? We noticed it beginning a couple of years ago. This is how it goes:
No one can say they have COVID. If you mention that C word, people go quiet and change the subject or turn away, acting as though they haven't heard. You're allowed to say you have something (flu, summer cold, persistent cough, some virus) as long as you minimise it. If you see someone wearing a serious mask, pretend you haven't seen them. If someone asks you how you are when you're not well (with one of those mystery illnesses) you say you are feeling fine now. You pretend not to notice that so many people around you are falling sick. And you put down the rise in serious health issues in your friends to aging.
And no one talks about it. So I'm breaking the taboo. I'm saying it out loud.

Canadians! Interested in helping out? (It's super quick)
COVID and flu monitoring
For the 2024-2025 surveillance season, the FluWatchers program continues to track cough and fever activity in the community, to help monitor flu, COVID-19, and other seasonal respiratory illnesses. The FluWatchers program gathers data on healthy participants as well as those experiencing cough and fever, so it's important that you try to answer the questionnaire each week whether you are healthy or sick. That will allow us to calculate more accurate rates of illness each week.
I just answered this week's FluWatchers survey! My weekly responses contribute to monitoring flu-like illness in my community. Help out by becoming a FluWatcher today! cnphi.canada.ca/fluWatcher/reg… #FluWatchers

That's great! The survey is super easy and quick, no trick questions, takes no more than a couple of minutes.

I’ve been filling out this survey for a couple of months and it’s literally 30 seconds or less to answer it - in case anyone is worried about not having enough time.
I just have two questions to answer every week: “do you have a fever?” and “do you have a cough” - options are “yes” or “no” or “I’m not sure”. That’s it.
If you haven’t had your latest Covid booster they may ask you about whether you’ve had it. Still super quick to answer.

I have a Luggable from CleanAirKits.com. It's MERV-13 instead of HEPA, but similar very good purification and the computer-case-fans make it quiet.
